In tribal locations, access and quality are the persistent issue in education faced by the children. despite existence of public infrastructure for primary education there are issues of poor enrolment of children in primary schools, high incidence of drop out of children and poor quality of education. These are attributed to scattered nature of the villages and poor road transport infrastructure. Education is one of the weakest areas in all the tribal blocks of the district. Though sufficient infrastructure is established, the enrolment rate and the quality of education are very low.
Most children now go to the government school in spite of the difficulties in reaching the school and poor quality of the facility. Most of the government schools have one or two rooms staffed with one or two teachers. Quality of education imparted is generally very poor and total enrolment as well as dropout rates alarmingly high after middle schooling due to unorganized education system, inadequate infrastructure, irregularity of teachers in the class rooms, non-involvement of the parents etc. leading to high percent of dropout at school level.
ARUDECS has been implementing an educational initiative called “Vaanga Padikkalaam”, aimed at promoting remedial education to provide the tribal children a place for a guided learning wherein gaps identified in the existing educational attainment of the children were studied and interventions were designed accordingly. ARUDECS continues to focus on quality primary education and reduction of school dropout through addressing the issues prevailing among tribal children.
Remedial education centres have been established in 13 tribal villages and tribal youths have been trained to handle evening tuitions to the children in the villages. Learning materials have been prepared to help them facilitate child centred learning. These Centres conduct regular competitions and cultural events to reinforce the rich cultural heritage of the tribal communities and motivate them them to excel in co-curricular and extra curricular aspects.
